In the 14th century St. Lucy's attribute was a lamp such as seen here. The lamp referred to her name, which means "light," and to written works that associated her with the "wise virgins" of Matthew 25:1-13.

The saint's blue robe and red mantle follow the pattern of many images of the Madonna and Child. Her blonde hair is customary in her portraits and narrative images. The inscription below the image is s[an]c[t]a lucia, "St. Lucy."
